Frequently Asked Questions about America for Gold
What is the America for Gold Fund?
The America for Gold Fund is an organization devoted solely to raising funds and awareness for America’s athletes training for both Summer and Winter games. The fund supports both able-bodied athletes and those with disabilities. Monies donated to the fund are put directly into the hands of America’s athletes to support their training, coaching, nutrition, and living expenses in preparation for international competition. Our mission is to underwrite the expenses of as many American athletes as possible, since support is needed years before medals are won.
Why does this fund exist?
America’s athletes need our support, and the America for Gold Fund fulfills a need. The fund links athletes with Americans, both corporate and private, using creative fundraising campaigns. It attempts to level out the playing field for our American athletes as they compete against many other well-financed individuals in international competition.
How long has this fund existed?
The America for Gold Fund was established in 2008 after founders saw the struggles of many athletes competing in Beijing. In the years to come, America for Gold hopes to grow more powerful and broad, reaching from coast to coast and allowing the American people to directly support athletes training for international competition.
Why do athletes need this funding?
Athletes are in great need of financial assistance as the costs of training and traveling to compete are high. Governing organizations work to support as many athletes as possible, but they are only capable of directing a small percentage to direct athlete support. The majority of financial responsibility is on the individual athlete.
Support levels vary by sport, but are typically reserved for athletes who have already qualified to represent the U.S. Typical funding is $5,000 a year, which falls far short of covering an athlete’s competition and training costs. American athletes receive a fraction of the support that their Western European counterparts do.
*Figures based on publicly available IRS forms 990.
How many athletes has this fund supported in the past?
The America for Gold Fund is a new organization, founded in May 2008. The organization anticipates its first grants being delivered to athletes in the beginning of 2009.
How do athletes apply?
Athletes apply through a thorough application process, ensuring that qualifications are met. Deadlines and forms are available online.
Does every athlete who applies get funding? How much?
Each application is reviewed by the America for Gold Board of Directors and is considered based on the monies available from fundraising efforts. Funds are dispersed directly to as many athletes as possible. The amount of the grant is determined by how much money was raised the previous year.
Why should Americans support this fund?
America as a country benefits from this fund in several ways. Our athletes are incredible role models, especially to our youth. They act as ambassadors for our country, and with consistent financial support, these athletes can continue inspiring future generations of proud Americans. These athletes deserve our support, our good wishes and our financial backing, because when they win, we all win.
